Podcast #33 - Funbutton

I recorded Funbutton, a hot local band, at the AllWNYRadio House Party IV in August. Here's the podcast!
Funbutton is what I'd call a rock band, but there is some punk influences and even kind of a Green Day sound. Whatever, it's their own sound once they're done with it!
Funbutton is a three-piece: Dave Chandler on drums, Ben Garvey on guitar and vocals, and Jim Seyler on bass and backing vocals.

You can visit their web page at www.myspace.com/dxcx4ever1
Songs played in the podcast:
Desperate Times (live)
Alive (live)
Fallen Heroes (live)
Gone Away (live)
Great Divide (live)
The Room (live)
interview
Time Stop (live)
Hysteria (live)
Ignorance (live)
Better Days (from their MySpace page)
Lady Man Killer (also from their MySpace page)

Podcast #32 - A bit of this, A bit of that...

Three bands that I want to bring you, but didn't really have enough to put in a podcast of their own.

Uncle Seth - You Don't Need An Ipod (PMN)

Tara of the Toronto band Uncle Seth wrote me to tell me about their new song
"To Be An Angel" which was recently premiered on CBC Radio One. They are a band
that has acheived some of their success due to embracing podcasting. I first
heard of them on CC Chapman's Accident Hash podcast and featured one of theier
song in an early experimental podcast of Christmas music. So they're giving
podcaster an advance on the song before it's released to Itunes. Hope you like
it!

Uncle Seth - To Be An Angel (PMN)

Link: http://musicface.com/uncleseth/

I've wanted to put the Lowertown Trio in a podcast for a long time and I
finally got out to record a show this summer at Gonzo's in Lockport. They gave
me a great interview, which I'll play here. We were standing on the walkway
outside the club which overlooks the historic Lockport Locks in the Erie
Canal.

Jason and Chris VanCleve has both toured with the Psychobilly band The Quakes
and talked quite a bit about touring and seeing the world as "Rock Stars." Turns
out to be not as glamorous as you'd think.

Unfortunately, I only have two original songs from them. They play a lot of
great interpretations of rockabilly standards and I wish I could play more.

Lowertown Trio - Internet Junkie (live at Gonzo's)

I met the Lincolns' Shootin' Fools a the Mohawk Place just this last week and
since I had been sitting on the Lowertown Trio material, I thought they'd be a
good fit together and let me get the LT3 out in a podcast. They're similar
styles, though not exactly the same. But this was one where again they gave me a
pretty good interview and some decent recordings.

I'm going to go out on a limb and play their track Rasputin, both because I
like it and so I can play a snippett of the original song it's based on. It's a
long way from the Boney M version.

Podcast #31 - The Old Sweethearts

I recorded the Old Sweethearts show at the Mohawk Place the same night as I met The Vores.

Ever since I heard "Snare Drum Hearts" on their MySpace page, I have liked this band. Their sound is similar enough to other bands to be easy to get comfortable with, yet their sound is uniquely thier own. I'm thrilled to be able to put them in a podcast.

I also had a great time with the interview with Roger and Eric. It flowed naturally and we seemed to have a good time just talking about music in general. It was a late show - the interview took place at about 3AM - and they had played the night before in the Southern Tier and didn't roll back into Buffalo until well into the daytime. Despite it all, they were a great interview. We talked about the music scene, their label, Harvest Sum Records, and some of the other bands they know, all in the back storage room amongst the empty beer bottles!

The Old Sweethearts are:

Roger Bryan - Vocals, Guitar
Mark Nosowicz - Vocals, Piano, Rhodes, Moog
Andrew Vaeth - Vocals, Bass Guitar
Jeff Pietrzak - Drums
Erik Roesser - Guitar

You can find them on the web at: http://www.harvestsum.com/tosh/
and make them your friends on MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/theoldsweethearts

Visit their label - Harvest Sum at http://www.harvestsum.com/

Song list:

Intro
unknown (live at the Mohawk)
unknown (live)
Me talking too much
Interview part 1
Snare Drum Hearts (from CD Arms Of The Town)
Interview part 2
Escape From Bonfire City (live)
Interview part 3
unknown (live)
Anything (live)
unknown (live)
Miles (from CD Arms Of The Town)
While You're Leaving (from CD Arms Of The Town)

The Old Sweethearts will be one of the bands playing at the Griffis Sculpture Park concert this weekend at the sculpture park, just off Route 219 in Ashford Hollow NY. It's a great place to see just for the sculpture and a worthy cause to support. The annual concert has historically always been a special show with some great, if not historic, lineups in the past. This year should be another great one! It's well worth the drive and you may even catch some early leaf color.

I apologize for the lateness of the podcast. I had meant to get it out last week, but it just didn't work out. I had my surgery as planned. What I didn't plan on was being so out of it for quite a while due to the pain and the painkillers (The drugs, not the band)

While I often felt good enough to get started on the mixing, I just couldn't concentrate and usually ended up nodding off at the keyboard! So it came together really slowly and I finally finished it up tonight (5am because I couldn't sleep) and will finally get it posted!

I still can't talk very much. My throat is sore, but I'm starting to get back to semi-normal food and the Doctor was pleased with my progress today. I've got a couple more weeks off before I can return to work, so I hope to get a couple more shows out in the meantime. Hopefully, my voice will hold up or else you'll hear more from Carol and Mary and the other robots!

I had met The Vores at the Music Is Art festival in July and had been wanting to do a podcast with them for a while. We finally found a date we could hook up on. It sure was worth being patient for!

Podcast #15: Red and Roxy

The first part of the podcast this week is the Red & Roxy show I caught last weekend with Flatbed at the Mohawk Place on March 25, 2006.

Red & Roxy are an acoustic duo, a husband and wife team, that writes their own material. It's a very folk-pop-ish style of music that's really easy to listen to. They also have help on percussion in the form of a big bear of a man called Gentle Tom. He plays an assortment of instruments, from bongos, congas, djembe to bodhran. He was there when I came in the 'Hawk, and was asking me about the podcast before I even got my bearings. I didn't realise at the time he was part of the group, or I would have gotten to know him better.

The show and their chatter between songs seemed so interesting and natural, that as I was editing the show, I decided to just let it run and only take out dead spots. You'll hear their show as it happened, live.

I don't have a song list, but they do give the names of many of their songs as they introduce them.

They don't have a CD to buy yet, but are going to work on one in the future. You can visit their website at www.sobomusic.com for show dates and more information.

For the second half of the podcast, I discuss some of my activities this weekend, where I got out to two different events and met some more interesting bands and possible future podcasts.

Music from some of those I talked with Friday:

The Unwelcome Guests www.unwelcomeguests.us www.myspace.com/unwwelcomeguests

Lorraine

Rockstar Hopes
The Unwelcome Guests CD Everything We've Done So Far can be ordered on their website.

Brilliant Moment
Hello Blue Hudson is working on their debut CD. Watch their website for news and show dates.

Dan Reitz www.danreitz.com www.myspace.com/danreitz
Dan has a CD out called Tortuga. You can download tracks by following the link from his website. He has placed the entire CD in the Internet Archive under a Creative Commons license, but if you like the music, please buy the CD! You can order it on his website.

AllWNYMusic - allwnymusic.com - I also talk a little about the All WNY Music kickoff concert this past weekend. They are a streaming audio internet radio station that features locall WNY music. The stream broadcast has been in beta tests and will be starting soon.

Podcast #14: Flatbed

Flatbed, recorded live at the Mohawk Place, Saturday March 25, 2006.
I finally got back into the swing of things and got out to the Mohawk last Saturday to record a podcast with two groups - Flatbed and Red & Roxy. I apologize for my absence from the podcast world last week. I had to be out of town for two successive weekends, which makes it had to keep a podcast in the works.

But this should more than make up for it. Flatbed is a band that I liked from the first listen. I was introduced to them through Dee Adams when her band opened for them at Merlin's a while ago. I liked what I heard and I hope you will too. They are "Americana" country-rock with blues and jazz influences and a totally unique signature sound.
I have the biggest crush on Joelle, the lead singer. Her voice is so cool, yet different and her stage demeanor and look is coy and wholesome, yet sexy at the same time. Boy, if I was 30 years younger, look out!
The band's sound at times can sound like anything from Big Brother to Grateful Dead to Donna The Buffalo or more contemporay groups like the Bottle Rockets or Uncle Tupelo. But through it all they have their own sound and draw from many influences. Derek Bassett the main lyricist has a way of writing about things you wouldn't necessarily expect to write a song about, yet they come out with as much meaning as any typical topic.
Songs included in the podcast are:
40 Miles
Bedsick
Big Wind
interview part 1
Breakdown
interview part 2
To Sea
interview part 3
Lonely Dispatcher
interview part 4
The Drought
interview part 5
Highwater
Hold On
Liver And Kidneys
Ride
Reville
Roulette
Last Song

You can find more about Flatbed at their website flatbedmusic.com and visit them at their MySpace page at www.myspace.com/flatbedmusic
Thanks to Mohawk Place for allowing me to record the show and for being a great place for local music! Check their schedule on the website for information on who's playing there.
All music in the podcast is property of Flatbed and is used with their permission.

Podcast #13: Greenwich Meantime

Greenwich Meantime is a new group of musicians on the Celtic music scene. Four of them were former members of the Glengarry Bhoys and the others have been associated with groups like Haggis, Hadrians Wall and the Barstool Prophets. While their music is hard to pin down to any single genre, they rely heavily on traditional Celtic instruments like pipes, flutes, whistles and fiddle. I think the best description of them is Modern Celtic.
I caught up to the band at the Shannon Pub on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Tonawanda NY March 5th, 2006 for their second trip there. The Shannon is a wonderful asset to those who enjoy Irish and Celtic music and hosts live music every weekend with everything from local to national and international acts. The food isn't bad either!
There was a large and enthusiastic crowd there to see GMT play. Shelly, James and "Gibby" were always popular with Buffalo fans in the Glengarry Bhoys and their fans have stood by them in their new venture. Nick is a natural leader with his guitar and vocals and Steph is not content to just play drums, he contributes to the vocals and songwriting. They all have had a hand in the composition of the songs on the new CD, Greenwich Meantime, and with this quality, quantity and sheer energy of material so soon for a new band, I expect great things ahead.
Song list:
Sausage Fingers (Live)

Podcast #12: Breakerbox

Shownotes for podcast #12 - Breakerbox

This weeks podcast features one of Buffalo's hottest new bands, Breakerbox.
Caution: May not be work-safe, some adult language is in the live recordings!
This is the first real rock band I've done a podcast of, and all I can say is, it's about time. Breakerbox is as exciting as it gets. Lead singer and bassist, Christina Reilly, has a no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoners stage presence and the voice to match. Her charisma and sheer attitude will have your attention from the first note.
Cosmic Stepping Stones guitarist Joe Pinnavaia and drummer Scott Calandra, complete the group and bring an intensity remarkable for a three-piece.
Thier web site describes the band:

"Born out of Buffalo, New York; a city known for discovering such acts as The Goo-Goo Dolls, Rick James, Ani DiFranco and Spyro Gyra. Breakerbox is on a mission to bring rock-n-roll music back to the fans and to the music industry. With their unique brand of Heavy Metal Motown (as they describe), they are influenced by everything from Motley Crue, Robert Palmer, David Lee Roth, Etta James, Pantera, and The Eurythmics. Their songs surround your eardrums with thick crushing guitars, big bombastic drums and strong sexy vocals that will leave you breathless and wanting more. This is something that is so missing in todays music, and is coming back with this gigantic wall of sound trio."

In interviewing the band, I found they were a group of serious professionals, dedicated to pursuing their future with whatever it takes. Watch this band, they will be going places.
Recorded and interviewed February 25, 2006 at Club Paradise in Blasdell NY http://www.clubparadiseofbuff.com/

Buffalo Live! Music Podcast #6: Jackdaw @ Swannie House

Show Notes for Podcast #6 Featuring Jackdaw at the Swannie House, Buffalo NY recorded December 30, 2005.

We saw 2005 out in style with a New Year's Eve Eve party at the Swannie House in the cobblestone District of Buffalo. The bar isn't much bigger than your living room, yet we seemed to squeeze a couple hundred Jackdaw fans in there to hear the band play their music Swannie style - minimal amplification, just a small PA and practice amps. It was more than enough for the room!

I've seen them play there several times before and it's always a good time. This night was no exception. Sound was a challenge. I'll not promise that you'll mistake this for anything like a quality recording, but I hope more that you can get the feel of the live shows Jackdaw puts on. They are what keeps their fans coming back over and over again. I talk to one couple who have been to literally hundreds of Jackdaw shows. Now that's dedicated fans!

Buffalo Live! Podcast #4

The Feast

Recorded at The Feast practice.

I was fortunate to have the band invite me to one of their practices. We chatted for awhile about the band and their projects, then I recorded a couple songs from their practice.I would have liked to stay longer, but I had to get in to work, so we had a little over an hour to work. Despite that, I think it turned out well.

I split the interview into four parts, sort of one topic per part, roughly.

Scattered between interview segments, are five tracks:

Rejuvenate, from the CD Strength

Parting @ Denny's, from the CD Strength

Supernatural Phase, recorded live

Time Still Waits, from the CD Strength

Time Swallowed, recorded live

The track Rejuvenate also appeared on the Lake Local Music CD

You can buy the CD Strength at CD Baby

We also talked about the upcoming compiliation CD to benefit the Buffalo Central Terminal Restoration project.

"Bring it Back to Life"

With more hit songs from the Best Groups of Western New York
